Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Program (SAIOP) for Adolescents and Adults
Our SAIOP program provides structured, evidence-based treatment services for individuals struggling with substance use disorders. Designed in alignment with the North Carolina Medicaid SAIOP service definition, our program supports both adolescents and adults through a combination of group counseling, individual therapy, and family involvement, with the ultimate goal of promoting recovery, enhancing functioning, and reducing the risk of relapse.
A Comprehensive and Supportive Treatment Approach
Our SAIOP is a time-limited, structured program that operates at least 3 hours per day, 3 days per week, offering intensive services while allowing individuals to continue living at home, attending school, or working. The program is available in both adolescent and adult tracks, tailored to meet the unique developmental and clinical needs of each population.
Participants receive services in a highly supportive environment focused on helping them achieve abstinence, develop coping skills, and address emotional and behavioral challenges that contribute to substance use.
Group Therapy: The Core of SAIOP
Group therapy is the central component of the SAIOP program. Following NC Medicaid requirements, individuals participate in structured, clinically led group sessions that address:
- Substance use education and relapse prevention
- Coping strategies and emotional regulation
- Interpersonal and communication skills
- Peer support and accountability
- Development of a recovery support network
Each group is facilitated by licensed or credentialed behavioral health professionals and tailored to the developmental stage and clinical needs of the participants. Group therapy fosters connection and allows participants to learn from and support each other in recovery.
Individual Therapy: Personalized Care and Goal-Setting
In addition to group therapy, each participant receives individual therapy sessions based on their individualized treatment plan. These sessions offer a private and focused opportunity to:
- Address co-occurring mental health concerns
- Process trauma or emotional distress
- Monitor progress toward recovery goals
- Develop individualized coping strategies
Individual sessions are scheduled regularly and delivered by licensed or credentialed therapists who understand the complexities of substance use and mental health.
Family Therapy: Healing and Support for the Whole Family
We recognize that substance use affects not only the individual but also their loved ones. Our program includes family therapy services, in accordance with NC Medicaid SAIOP guidelines, to help families:
- Understand the nature of substance use disorders
- Improve communication and rebuild trust
- Develop skills to support their loved one’s recovery
- Address family dynamics that may contribute to substance use
Family involvement is encouraged and supported throughout treatment, as family engagement is a critical factor in sustained recovery—particularly for adolescents.

Who Is Eligible?
Our SAIOP is available to Medicaid beneficiaries who meet medical necessity criteria for intensive outpatient services due to a substance use disorder. Participants must demonstrate a need for structured outpatient support but do not require inpatient or residential care.
